About CHÖ (Cutting Karmic Appearances)

Chö (also known as Chöd) (Tibetan: གཅོད, Wylie: gcod lit. ‘to sever’) is a unique practice found in all schools of Tibetan Buddhism. The practices are based on the Prajñāpāramitā or “Perfection of Wisdom” sutras, which expound the “emptiness” concept of Buddhist philosophy. Chö combines prajñāpāramitā philosophy with specific meditation methods and tantric ritual. The Chö practitioner seeks to tap the power of fear through various activities.

Confess your hidden faults.

Approach what you find repulsive.

Help those you think you cannot help.

Anything you are attached to, give that.

Go to the places that scare you.

- FIVE SLOGANS OF MACHIG LABDRÖN

Chö, originating from Tibet, is a unique practice that originated in Tibet from a female dakini, Machig Labdrön. Machig Labdrön, a courageous and unconventional figure from 12th century Tibet, was a heroine in her own right. She crafted the Mahamudra Chö system, which builds upon the Buddha’s wisdom and applies it directly to the challenges of negative mental states and adversarial energies. Machig’s distinctively feminine approach involves embracing and nurturing the very “demons” that typically evoke fear and aversion within us, transforming these reactive emotions into expressions of love. This practice represents a tantric path towards cultivating compassion and fearlessness, offering a radical technique for cutting through the entanglements of the ego.

Joining the V.N.O.S. CHÖ© course and practising Chö can transform one’s negative energies—addiction, shame, fear, depression and so on—into the energy of liberation. For Dharma practitioners, it is a profound method for cultivating both conventional bodhichitta (offering oneself to others) and ultimate bodhichitta (dispelling the ignorance of truly existent ‘I’). While this method is more forceful than usual, this practice can be practised in everyday life towards enlightenment.

Gen Namgyel-la has a special connection with Chö, having been recognised by oracles and Rinpoches as a very good practitioner of Chö in a past-life; living for many years in a cave while practising Chö. After Genla’s nearly 40 years of Dharma teachings, we are incredibly fortunate that the necessary conditions have come together for Genla to bestow the Chö teachings upon a select group of students for the first time ever - YES! This teaching has never been taught before by Gen Namgyel-la.

This course will be entirely unique and is never to be repeated.

Gen Namgyel-la  will uniquely combine the authentic traditional Chö teachings and practices with his usual contemporary teaching style that includes humour and very clear, succinct explanations that we can understand and apply in our daily lives.

During this course, Gen Namgyel-la will give oral transmission of the practice, explanations and engage in Q&A sessions.
